Older and Wiser - Prelude

In a week's time I'm going to be older and wiser. That's the story I'm going to stick to, delusional or not. :)

My darling husband J who's going to be home for our anniversary as well. So here's to the week long celebration and dinners with family and friends.

All is good.

Our reading spot.

We lay on the bed or floor, I simply can't remember. I stared at the ceiling and she was staring at the ceiling or not. I'm not sure. It was home, or her usual newspaper reading nook. All the details were fuzzy.

You see, she read her newspapers by the balcony in natural light. With her cup next to her. I used to sit next to her, reading my own things. Mom would usually tsk at me, telling me how I was going blind by reading when I was laying down. Aunt would keep reading, then slowly lay down next to me and read as well.

But all I could remember was that we lay there, perfectly happy and chatting about our daily lives like we always did.

It has been six years and I can't believe how much I miss her.

Come to think of it, her birthday is in another 6 days. She would have been 66 years old this year.

I miss you my dearest aunt. I hope you are having the greatest time in heaven and I miss you.

Prawn and cherry tomato spaghetti

I rarely post photos of my cooking because they never turn out well. Like that one time I tried making warm chocolate lava cake and it turned out to be some kind of soggy brownie because everything cooked through. >.< But this time, I can proudly say I've succeeded. Prawn and cherry tomato with garlic and sweet peas.

I'm so proud. *tears welling*

Love: Chanel Rouge Coco in Chintz

I'm guilty of indulging myself all in the name of stress relief and urm, well I'm just going to stick with stress relief. Every time I walk past the Chanel makeup store I just feel like buying something to cheer myself up. I mean, Chanel bag with Chanel ribbon and something affordable from Chanel. It can't get any better.

Anyhooo,  Chanel Rouge Coco. It's so hydrating on my chapped lips!

Plus it's a pretty color and I don't look like a clown.

But it's $45. Good god since when does lippie cost $45?!

Home organizing and humidity: Round 1.

I'm always a silent lurker on home improvement sites, DIY, and probably decorate-anything-and-everything kinda sites. I've been brainwashed into thinking, now that I have my home, it can look magazine worthy too.

I picked BoConcept's living room layout in the end. Wall storage and the lot. I didn't buy everything from BoConcept of course, because I would be bankrupt by the time I was done. I got the fab coffee table after much, much consideration. In the end, my living room did not look anything like BoConcept's. I guess I lack the decorating gene because my home did not look like this.

Martha Stewart, you've ruined me.

I don't understand the words that are coming out of your mouth.

I can sadly say I am having difficulty talking to young people. *cries*

Young people. Youth. People born after 2000. I can understand what they are saying, and yet I don't. The words are going in but they mean jack. I don't think I can ever relate to them.

Case 1 - 16 year old

Her: I don't want to focus on studies because I want to be a dancer.
Me: Well, you should try and do well so it could be a backup plan to your dancing.
Her: If I have a backup plan, it means I don't believe I'll succeed as a dancer.

Managing disappointment and casting the first stone.

I’ve been thinking about something for the past few days, and I’m finally ready to write about it. Last Friday was the last working day of our financial year and promotion list went out. Some were joyous and some were disappointed. Such is life I guess.

A manager, Rob, was promoted to senior manager while a consultant, Constance, who was expecting a double promotion didn't get it.

Rob was happy about his promotion and everyone shook his hand, gave him a pat on the back while Constance was feeling let down.

Art vs graffiti.

How does one recognise art?

It has been something that's at the back of my mind. Recently someone put up stickers at traffic crossings and sprayed "my grandfather road" on the island. Of course the person was arrested by the police.

I thought the stickers and words were funny. It was something lighthearted, nothing libelous or offensive. The authorities didn't think so. They called it vandalism. See, I don't know if that's right.

The Return of Queen B.

Season 5 of Gossip Girl came to an end last month and it gave me hope that the shorter final season would bring all that we love back to the upper east side.

The last season was just all over the place. Silly plot lines. Dair. Marrying the Prince of Monaco. ChIvy. Lola. Seriously it was just bad with zero references to previous storylines or real life events. I used to make J watch the show with me, laughing at all the zingers and smack talk. Now I stop insisting that he does, because we all know that the Greatest Show of All Time was anything but.

Hello world I'm still here.

Wow has it been more than 3 months since I posted anything?

Anyway time flies and I'm really glad my project is over. No more late nights. No more frozen dinners. No more falling asleep with makeup on. No more outbreaks from the crazy stress and the sleeping-with-makeup-on nights. Well I still have crazy outbreaks. Perhaps the sudden disappearance of stress makes my hormones go crazy and my skin just decides to overcompensate the lack of stress by sprouting new red hot angry zits all over my face.

While I have let myself go during these horrendous months, my home has fallen into pieces as well. Random mails, magazines and newsletter litter ANY flat surfaces, still unread and unsorted.

By the way, this doesn't work for my home. My dear brother leaves read and unread mail all over the table and I just can't tell which magazines or newspapers he hasn't read. I just put them in one pile and watch it grow taller every single day.

My couch is THE place where all clean laundry goes to collect dust. Yes. We do laundry and dumps the lot on the couch when they are dry because I'm just too tired to fold everyone's clothes. Yes I fold my brother's socks and for the life of me, I still don't get why J has orphan socks that don't match. Where did the rest go?

Anyway life is slowing down for me and I guess I have the time to fold laundry now. :/

Improvement and the Real Leadership Lessons of Steve Jobs.

It has been a while since Steve Jobs passed and while I was browsing HBR, I found this and was inspired.

I guess we can't all be trailblazing innovators, revolutionizing the world. But we can all learn from the greats.

There is always something that can be improved on in everything we do. I could work in the filing room, managing thousands of documents and files and whatnot for years and I bet there will always be something we wished were better.

Improvement needs focus, determination and I guess mental strength. Improvement doesn't happen overnight. We have become too accustomed to the instant, Google-and-voila, gratified generation that anything that doesn't happen immediately is a failure and not worth our time pursuing.

Forgetful owner and the lonely sidebar.

I have updated the layout of this little space since... oh dear god I can't remember. I am so busy with work that I sometimes forget how much I love surfing the net and posting things that I love!

I have been meaning to update the side bar on the right with links to site I read, because that's how I get to them anyway. I tried tracking updates using BlogLovin' but I simply couldn't keep up with the pace at which everyone updates!

I have become the senile Alzheimer-ish owner who sometimes forgets she likes writing and what day of the week it is. :(

Anyhoooooo I will update the sidebar, probably on weekends when I'm not summoned back to work. Yes, my work has come to this. Working on public holidays and weekends at my own expense. Pfffft.

Any clue on what should go in the blue box?

Fly, butterfly, fly!

I just love this photo.

Word of the day - Irregardless

Every time I hear the word "irregardless" being used, I cringe and fight the urge to whip out the Oxford dictionary and break their little hearts that the word doesn't exist.

It is not a real word, and despite the attempt to sound smart, you are failing. People (like me) are too embarrassed to correct you in public.

I encourage and applaud the use of made up language for comedic purposes, for e.g. ugly/ridunculous/fabulosity. It's just the use of such words as if they are proper in professional situations that kills me.

Anyhoo is there a fake/made up word that irks you?

Want: Smooth glossy locks.

I'm a boring person when it comes to clothes, makeup and hairstyle. Especially hairstyle.

I like my hair just a certain way. No fancy cuts, no striking colors and the furthest I would try would be curling my hair. I'm just a lazy girl who would rather sleep in for another 10 minutes than spend that time blowdrying and styling my hair in the morning. Low to zero maintenance? That's my kinda hairstyle.

And how I wish my hair looks like this!

This is a look by Marc by Marc Jacobs. Glossy, non-frizzy and so polished. You got my vote mister.

Lisa Eldridge love.

I always love Lisa Eldridge and her helpful videos!

There's a new one and I think it's helpful for a lot of us who have to work in office with horrible lighting.

It looks so simple. Minimum products and voila! You look fresh, awake and polished. I feel like rushing out to get a good blush brush. *girly screams*

Loving it!

Keepsakes, love and friendzoned.

J wasn't home for Valentine's day this year and I must admit I was a little bummed out. It was very sweet that he sent flowers, but I didn't prepare anything since I thought we weren't celebrating. Oops.

Then I read on Facebook that a good ol' friend of mine decided to clear his drawer of teenage angst, a drawer full of letters, notes and keepsakes from his youth. Yes, THAT drawer.

Out of morbid curiosity, he opened a note and found that he was immediately friendzoned by a crush. In the end, he decided to throw out the entire drawer of keepsakes.

I have a drawer like this. I can't remember every single note but I am extremely curious to re-read all my notes and letters. God knows I have a crush or two back in my day. Gawd. Back in my day makes me sound prehistoric. Pffft.

Boy I crushed on for 2 whole years and I still got nervous when we last spoke. (Wow.) Boy whom I think liked me for those 2 years but never once told me. Boy whom I hung out with a couple of times. Boy whom I ... never mind. You get what I mean. All the puppy loves we all have. I don't ever regret them (excluding destructive relationships), because it was perhaps the most sincere and sweetest times in our lives.

But anyway, Valentine's day should be a day of love. Love that didn't come to anything, love that you have in your life.

So to all my crushes, family, friends and of course my husband, I love you all!

Red Valentino Love.

I'm not sure if I'm stressed (chances: high) or I've gone absolutely bonkers (over work and fashion), but I am very very tempted to walk into Red Valentino this very second and buy this $1000 dress.

It will be so pretty and perfect!

  1. It's a huge chunk of my pay.
  2. It's cutesy and therefore I will grow out of it very very soon. I'm not exactly a spring chicken.
  3. It's satin, or so it says on all the research I've done. For all I know it's polyester. $1000 for polyester is just daylight robbery.
  1. I can wear it to weddings.
  2. I can wear it to work, even though my job doesn't the honor.
  3. It's cutesy!
  5. I will regret it, just like how I regret not getting the Red Valentino Cherry Blossom dress. It's not unavailable ALL OVER THE FRIGGIN WORLD.

Something pretty, chic and utterly feminine can't possibly go out of fashion right? Look at the Spring/Summer 2011 collection. *Swoooon*

Sigh. Let me know (whatsapp, comments, email etc.) if I show just close my eyes and sign on the bill. Of course errr I'll discuss with J if we should spend such a big chunk of our disposable income on a dress. Eek.

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!
